Peru, the host economy of APEC 2024, held the 23rd Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation Meeting (PPSTI 23) during the first Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM 1) at the Lima Convention Center on February 28-29th, 2024. More than 70 representatives from 14 APEC economies participated in the event. The participating economies include Australia; Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Korea; Malaysia; The Philippines; Peru; Russia; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; and The United States.

 

During the PPSTI 23, Chinese Taipei proposed to encourage cross-border Venture Capital from APEC economies for harnessing the innovation power of start-ups to address grand challenges. Moreover, Delegates indicated strong support for Malaysia’s presentation on the APEC Open Science Alliance and considered it as one recommendation for future mission candidates for PPSTI.

 

Next, delegates presented their reports at the Sub-groups’ meetings. Mr. Michael LIU, on behalf of ACABT, attended the meeting of the Subgroup A - Building Science Capacity , presenting the 2024 ACABT Annual Report and PPSTI 205 2023A Report and disseminating ACABT’s events (2024 Steering Committee Meeting, 2024 Green Synergy Solutions Events, and 2024 APEC YES Challenge) in Chiang Mai, Thailand this September 2024.

 

Returning to the main meeting, the PPSTI Board presented a potential format of the MOIP (Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy) Pilot for feedback, with a timeline for the pilot test starting at SOM3. Besides, Korea presented the “APEC Scientists Exchange Program” to facilitate academic exchange and cooperation across the APEC economies. Last but not least, delegates joined a policy dialogue on the importance of STI to biodiversity in ecosystem for resiliency solutions.
